A Three Year Old's Approach to Making Friends

Now that spring is in the air, we have noticed a lot more people out and about. Our backyard faces a field/park/playground/schoolyard which is great for the kids. Our backyard also faces other backyards that have the little tikes play equipment like ours meaning lots of kids. Today Julia was constantly making her way to the backyard neighbor's fence where a little boy her age was out playing. Her on one side of the fence, he on the other. Because she was on the loose I was watching her every move and got to see how they interacted and became friends....

Backyard Neighbour: "Where's your dog?"
Julia: "We don't have a dog."
BN: "Huh?"
Julia: "We don't have a dog, we have a tat (cat)."
BN: "Oh"
Julia: "We have a tat and his name is Gingaw (Ginger)"
BN: "Oh"
Julia: "Wanna see me hop on one foot?"
BN: "Ya"
extending her arms out for balance, one leg straight out infront and sticking the tongue out for extra balance, Julia begins to hop.
Julia: "Can you hop on one foot?"

In no time, two little three year olds were hopping on one foot back and forth along the fence.

Presto! Instant friends. After that, he spent the entire afternoon over in our backyard. Joel joined in. When BN's sister came home, she joined in as did Jacob when he came home. Here they were five little neighbors becoming five little friends in minutes.

How come it's not that easy for me?

Hurray for the kids making new friends! Thanks for sharing that story Leslie, it put a huge smile on my face! It's always good to hear your family's continuing to transition well! (Camp's just not going to be the same this year!!)

Have you tried hopping on one foot?

Haven't tried hopping yet, but I may end up resorting to that. And yes, my balance does suck.

Good thing though, Two days after that it was their mom and me, talking over the fence, for over an hour.

Instead of askng "can you hop on one foot?" I asked my usual line, "are you into scrap bookin'?"

Good news, she said yes and invited me to come over someday soon.
