Just when I thought I saw it all...

Today was my day to volunteer at school. I sat at the table and printed grade 1 words and listened to first graders read. While I was printing the sample words for the students, the teacher had them all on the carpet teaching them words and letter sounds. She is great at what she does and had the entire class quiet and still as she spoke in a very quiet voice.

Then, breaking the silence, was the sound of the ever so popular piece of modern technology, the cell phone! I thought this was very odd to be heard in a room full of 6-year-olds. At first I gulped thinking it may be mine. I would have been extremely embarrassed for disturbing the teaching moment of the kids and their sponge-like brains.

The teacher turned towards the coats looking very puzzled. I did the same. Then she looked at me. I smiled and shrugged. After several rings, a little boy, no bigger than a minute, quietly got up from the carpet, went to his coat, found his phone and answered it, "Hello?" Finished his convo. and sat back down as if nothing happened.

Odd. Is that not odd?

What next?

That like totally baffled me!! I am so stunned! No kidding part of our problem is lack of parental supervision! Why would a 6 year old ever be out without being accompanied by an adult (whom in case of and emergency would have a cell phone)?!? Crazy! Just crazy!

i know. my neighbors kid got a cell phone, i think she was in grade 3, so that she could walk home by herself. she was to call her mom at work and talk to her the entire time she walked home. her mom thoughts she would be safe doing this. she asked me what i thought and i said how does carrying a cell phone and talking prevent anyone from scooping her up? i don't know, i still think she should have gotten someone to walk her kid home, but that's just me.

Sheesh! That is so crazy. I used to find it strange enough to see teenagers on the c-train with cell phones but now they have them at the age of 5 or 6? That's not right! I don't even know if I would feel comfortable having a kid of that age answering my HOME phone....haha.

No Kidding.

My kids don't answer our home phone unless they know who it is.

Wow! Unreal.

WHo would even be calling him? He's 6 - isn't it obvious he's in school during the day?
