The Counter

In our kitchen we have a counter-top island. It really comes in handy. The sink is there, the dishwasher is there, there are three stools that sit at the counter and it is convenient for baking and cooking. In other words it is well used. The kids each have their spot and they sit at the counter every morning for breakfast and every afternoon for their snack. It is also a great homework space while mommy and daddy are cleaning up dishes.

What I love most about the island is not the practicality of it, but the community it has created. You know, like the bar without the bar if that makes sense.

We have been here just over a year now. In this past year we have had a lot of people in our home. As large groups, small groups, and as individuals. This has been an intentional attempt to get to know people and to build community with others.

This may sound sappy (or not) but the other night when I was wiping down the counter I thought of all the people who have stood around it. Talking, laughing, crying, and eating. When friends come to visit, it seems to be a favourite spot to congregate. And, while couches inches away remain empty, a cluster of people sit and stand around the island. It is somewhat a sacred space now.

I love it!

Thanks for stopping by, making yourselves at home and creating something special out of the ordinary for me!

Awww...what a nice thought! We don't have an island like this and it would be so nice to have - for this very reason! Double awww...your hubby posting his comment for all the world to see! Wonderful!

While I can't say I have been in your home since you have moved in, I can say that when the Wilfongs were living there I was always hanging out at that counter too. It was always a nice place to congregate. Thanks for the reminder:)

It is true that the kitchen is the heart of the home. There is a warmth there that is so often not felt elsewhere. Funny but great!
