The GODman

Teaching children about God and the truths of Scripture can often be a challenge. Kids don't just believe things because you say it is so. Let's face it, there are some very difficult things to get your head around when it comes to God.

Yesterday, I was standing in front of a gym full of kids teaching them about Jesus. We have just spent a month pondering the birth of Christ and what that means for us and now we are continuing with his life as a grown up.

I was trying to sell them on the truth that Jesus is perfectly GOD and perfectly man at the same time. As I am teaching this, I can hear how ridiculous I am sounding. I mean how can I possibly make any sense of this to a room full of 5-12 year olds.?

Have you, as an adult had any difficulty believing this for yourself?

I then proceeded to explore a short passage of Scripture with them. It was incredible for me to experience it from this angle. I have read this passage several times before, but never seeing it as a way to confirm that Jesus is perfectly GOD and perfectly man at the same time.

Take a moment and see it for yourself:

"One day Jesus said to his disciples, 'Let's go over to the other side of the lake.' So they got into the boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, 'Master, Master, we're going to drown!' He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 'Where is your faith?' he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, 'Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.'"

I went to a flip chart and made one heading GOD and the other heading Man. We then went through the story and listed all of the GOD things he embodied as well as all of the man things.
Here is what we came up with:
Man: 1. hanging out with friends. 2. sailing. 3. sleeping.
GOD: 1. can control the weather. 2. can perform miracles. 3. Is perfect, without sin (a truth we learned from other stories as well)

I love that God's word is for all people, of all ages. I'm glad that he can speak to my heart at the same moment I am trying to teach little ones.

Truly Amazing!
