Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Leslie's Door...

Like clockwork, my friend came back yesterday. When she knocked on the door, I opened it just a crack, revealing one eye, looking like a paranoid freak. "Hello" I said, "I'm trying not to let the animals out....would you like to come in?" Her face beamed brighter than usual at the prospects of being invited in.

I offered coffee to her and her partner, they declined. She made herself quasi-comfortable on the sofa across from me and we became reaquainted. We talked about our families and where she lived and discovered people we both knew (sort of).

She said she couldn't stay long because someone was waiting in the car for her, but was thrilled to have a moment to read her Scriptures to me. And she did. The new issue of her magazine was about the end times. She read Scripture to me that said all of the things that were predicted to happen in the last days and informed me that these things were happening and that indeed, the end was near.

She asked me about my beliefs. At this point I was able to share that yes, I had beliefs. In fact, I was a pastor. I told her that there are a lot of predictions about the end of time but that no one knows for sure. I also told her that it doesn't matter to me what is going to happen, what matters is that I have a faith in Jesus, and he's got it all under control.

"Yes, faith is important" she replied. She went on to read me more Scripture, and directed me to a table of fulfilled prophecy concerning the last days. She asked me to read it and she would be back on Monday to answer any questions I may have.

"FIne" I said, "and when you come you can ask me any questions you have as well."

She left... still smiling... still hopeful.

I better get ready for Monday. Hey...wait! That's Thanksgiving! Gobble, gobble. I'll be busy.

So are we supposed to live/act a certain way, knowing the end is near?

Are you asking me or what she had to say?

What she had to say.

She didn't say anything other than the fact that it is happening. She wanted me to read the mag and she would check up on me. I was going to read it but apparently I left it 'lying around' and it got chucked. Maybe it would have had more to say on the subject.

I wonder how long she will keep coming. I don't think she wants to be my friend darn-it.

I totally did not feel listened to, just "talked to." **sigh**

Now what?

Learn from the experience. Understand that sharing your faith isn't about "selling" something. The whole "door to door salesman" thing just isn't the way isn't supposed to be done.

What I don't get about door to door evangelism is what the salesperson gets out of it. You know? Normally when someone comes to your door they want you to buy something. So what do you have to offer her? If you "sign up" what will she gain?

You should ask her about the need to buy into what she's offering. Is their urgency? Is it about you being saved from the "lake of fire". I'd be interested to know.

Be friendly even if she doesn't appear to want friendship. Not much else you can do.

I would say she is trying to 'sell' me on something, but I have never approached her in that way. I haven't even tried to share my faith with her, I just let her know that I have my own and if and when she asks particulars, I give them.

I totally disagree with 'cold call' evangelism as well as standing on the street corner telling everyone they are sinners and need a savior. No. doesn't work like that.

I was hoping that we could become friends if nothing else, but I don't think she is looking for that. She has an agenda!

She also isn't telling me I need to sign up. She is trying to stir some interest so I will ask some questions.

Interesting. Good on you for inviting her in though.

Thanksgiving, I dont get that for another month or so. SUCKY! Thanksgiving here is like 3rd week of November or something. Boooooo. Enjoy some turkey for me!

Funny american and canadian thanksgivings were created for the same reason but they are at different times. odd
