It was a non-stop day today, running here there and everywhere. I am very fortunate to be able to be home most days to plan and prepare a decent, well balanced meal for the fam even if they don't eat it! But today was not one of those days. These are the days of 'frozen cuisine' or 'just add water' pancakes for supper.
I was feeling a little frazzled (not a lot, I am somewhat comfy in my chaos) trying to make supper, help with homework, mediate fights and clean house for an evening appointment/visit. While flippin' fish sticks, and squeezing out the last sputters of ketchup onto plates, I was thinking about a characteristic of mine. One of those characteristics that annoys and frustrates everyone else, kind of like the 'late person', but able to make me laugh, out loud....by myself!
You see, the ketchup bottle was turned upside down in the fridge because it was almost empty. I was tapping and squeezing and getting what I could from it. In no time I had had enough and wasn't about to fuss over a tblsp of ketchup. I chucked it and reached for the brand new bottle. Ahh... the ease of the first squeeze!!! I love brand new. Unlike Steve, I will start a new bottle of ketchup, or dishwashing detergent or tube of toothpaste before the old one is completely emptied!!! Sometimes I'll throw out the almost gone product but usually I leave it there, next to the freshly opened new one, knowing he will go for the old one 'til it is gone.
Not only do I open things before the old is gone, I am a 'middle of the loafer'! This is crazy, I know (I've learned to accept this about me). When I go to make toast or a sandwich or whatever needing bread, I always open the bag, reach past the crust and first few pieces on the end, and grab a slice closer to the middle. They are fresher you see. I like fresh! And, as you can probably guess, Steve would never do such a thing.
I'm so glad I can laugh at myself and was able to lighten my mood tonight.
Are there any other 'middle of the loafers' or 'early bottle openers' out there or have I just frustrated all of you who are not like me?

I'm with you, although I think I generally throw out the not quite empty ones. Who would want to eat the bread at the front of the loaf?!?
I am like your hubby...I use everything till the last drop. I would have prob opened up the ketchup bottle and gotten a spoon to get all the possible leftovers out! I'm that crazy!!!
Finally, someone who understands my premature bottle opening antics. Especially with things like ketchup, I see no point in having to scrape for the VERY last little bit.
I've done the bread thing before too. Hehe.
I am definitly the use till its gone person. Chris is more the open the new one and leave the old one sitting there because he knows I will use it. I guess I figure that if I paid for it why not use all of it:)
I read your blog all the time, gathering inspiration from your anecdotes.
Even though I grew up under the same roof as Steve, I'm with you--"middle of the loafer", "late person", and go for the new before the old is finished. However, I cannot bring myself to throw out that last little bit--at least not until it has turned into a science experiment or something. Hubby is also like me--not good when it comes to being "late".

I laughed while reading this because, although I wasn't conscious of it, I ALWAYS reach into the middle of the loaf. AHA, I knew we were related. I am also guilty of going to the store, choosing an item to purchase and picking from the middle of the pile - NEVER the top one!!!
brilliant and hiliarious. i'm always onto the new toothpaste while bev squeezes for every last bit. thanks for a good reading to start out my day.
