Sometimes I shake my head and wonder how it is that my 'to do' list rarely gets completely scratched off. There always seem to be dishes to wash, laundry to do, beds to make etc. yet somedays they just don't get done.
At the end of the day I wonder how this is possible since I don't actually sit down until the evening. I am going and busy all day long.
Then yesterday I was reminded of all the unexpected things that happen in a day. Things that you don't plan for and are not on the 'to do' list, but end up taking a good portion of time away from you, like it or not.
For instance, in the midst of the storm of lunch to be made, backpacks to be unloaded, dishes to wash, a floor to be mopped and piles of laundry, the phone rings. Not a big deal. But while on the phone trying to pay very close attention to the person on the other side I here a disturbingly loud smash coming from around the corner. It was the sound of a huge mess to clean up-not on the 'to do' list.
I hung up the phone to check out the damage. Not bad, just an entire fluorescent light fixture kicked out of the ceiling by a soccer ball with a zillion pieces of dust-like glass all over the garage floor!!!
Shooing the kids outside, I knew this would be a time consuming clean-up. If you've ever seen fluorescent bulbs smash, you would understand.
I grabbed the broom and headed for the mess. Doing my best to gather every stray partical, I reach for the light switch since I can't see well enough. Because the light fixture is laying on the floor, that doesn't work for me. So what do I do? I open the garage door to sweep by sunlight. This was working quite well until the breeze picked up and was blowing my pile around and around...just for the fun of it!
Finally, I finished the job (in the time it would have taken to clean the entire kitchen). Longing for a sweet drink, I grabbed a can of Coke Zero out of the fridge and headed upsatirs to tackle the bathroom. Things were going well until the can of coke was dropped, spraying all over the walls, floor, cabintes and door. Lovely!
So there went my afternoon. Busy yet uneventful with nothing happening according to plan. Go figure!
